Why i registered in facebook,

The author raises an important issue. Facebook has been growing in an extraordinary speed people with no facebook accounts are considered old and outdated. And people with facebook accounts and not many online friends are considered lonely and sad. BAsicly its a labeling aystem in facebook that invades the user's mind and forcing him to fake a persona in order to gain friends or to be considered popular. I have never used facebook for educational purposes but thats only because i have alternatives.
Facebook and privacy is an issue by itself. User's must know the diffrence between fun and inappropriate.

Q1: how did you define the user privacy settings and why?
Q2: have you added a respectable figurr like a father, boss or teacher on facebook? How did that change your posts?

"Mother Tongue" review

The articel talks about an issue that i have faced at one point in my life, where i had to translate from Arabic to English literally and the sentence would be "broken" or "fractured" in the same way Amy's mother did. The reason could be that we hang on to our original language, or it could be that we dont know enough English and we try to cover up by using english word with our first language's grammer. It could cause confusion if one is not used to this, he wouldn't be able to understand. the way to undo this is by realising the diffrence between the languages you speak. you need to break them down and understand their grammer. And with time one would be able to do it.

Q1: How can family affect the language of an individule?
Q2: How can you fix your fractured language based on your own experience?

"Globalization, Then"

"Guns, Germs, and Steel"  is a 1997 book by Jared Diamond, professor of geography and physiology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The Basic outline of the book is: In our earliest societies, humans lived as hunter-gatherers. The first step towards civilization is the move from hunter-gatherer to agriculture, with the domestication and farming of wild crops and animals. Agricultural production leads to food surpluses, which supports sedentary societies, specialization of craft, rapid population growth, and specialization of labor. Large societies tend to develop ruling classes and supporting bureaucracies, which may lead in turn to the organization of nation states and empires.
He also says that globalization took advantage mostly of the influence of geography on societies and cultures.

Globalization is an economic tidal wave that is sweeping over the world.
Here are a few disadvantages of globalization:
1- The general complaint about globalization is that it has made the rich richer while making the non-rich poorer.
2- Multinational corporations which were previously restricted to commercial activities are increasingly influencing political decisions.
3- Some experts think that globalization is also leading to the incursion of communicable diseases. Deadly diseases like HIV/AIDS are being spread by travelers to the remotest corners of the globe.

And some advantages to it:
1- Now there is a worldwide market for companies and consumers to access products from different countries.
2- There is cultural intermingling. Each country is learning more about other cultures.
3- Since we share financial interests, corporations and governments are trying to sort out ecological problems for each other.
4-  Socially we have become more open and tolerant towards each other, and people who live in the other part of the world are not considered aliens.

Anti-globalists also claim that globalization is not working for the majority of the world. During the most recent period of rapid growth in global trade and investment, 1960 to 1998, inequality worsened both internationally and within countries. The UN Development Program reports that the richest 20 percent of the world's population consume 86 percent of the world's resources, while the poorest 80 percent consume just 14 percent.

I personally Have contradicting views on Globalization. I think its a good thing that the world is coming together in terms of transportation, technology, agriculture and communication...etc, But globalization came at a price. Countless ancient languages and cultures were eliminated as a result of globalization. so in a way globalization is a double edged sword.

Q1: Can you think of a way in which globalization has helped/hurt you or your hometown?
Q2: How does globalization help the rich? and hurt the poor?

The Future of Reading is Backlit and Bright.

I've read the article and i think that it has more than one valid point. There are more people in the world right now who dont read. but people are switching to e-books and cell phone comics and other generated text. Some people might not agree and think that it is not the same, and that books should be on printed on paper. On the other hand others think that this is easier and that this is the evoloution of books.
I agree with both sides. I think that when an author writes a book he puts a little bit of himself writing those pages. he feels his emotions transforming into words. its not the same feeling you get when you write on a computer. seeking the book is also half the experience, you have to really want it to read it. and after that while touching the paper and reading the words somehow you are able to enjoy it more than sliding sideways. I am a person of science though, and i believe in evoloution of technology. E-books are not bad, they presented the laze society of nowadays with a chance to grab hundreds of copies of books, news papers, comics and magazines. so in the end e-books are helpful, but we must not forget what its like to read a book.

Q1: which one do you enjoy more and why?
Q2: why do you read books? does it matter if it was on paper or a screen?

"tweet less kiss more"

I am a person who multi-tasks all the time and I use my cellphone all the time. I dont think it is a dangerous thing so long as it is done withing a controlled environment. Multi-tasking could be helpfull when you put enough attention on what you are doing and it makes diong the activity alot more exciting and non-routine.
I agree that we need to slow down and not let technology control us. but its not gonna happen since technology keeps on advancing and people buying things that they barely understand. so the best we can do is to get used to is and try to not forget that human interaction and going out and actually doing things by yourself is not a bad thing.
1- statistics say that a person who is into technology is "less selfish" in a relationship do you agree? why?
2- is the blame with the person or the company making the product?

"I think therefore IM" comments and questions.

Evolution, is my answer. the word "Social" has changed from normal interaction to Internet based. People are now communicating with tens if not hundreds of others daily. Using shortcuts is not just a fun way of doing it. No, its a necessity. It now has its own people and culture and I think that has to be respected. I think that anyone who doesn't agree with Shortcuts and "Internet Slang", either doesn't understand it or didn't put much effort into it. I think that Ms. Fogarty has the correct idea about it. Students must be able to distinguish between formality and conversations. They will need to put they're ideas into paper as fast as they can so they would need to use shortcuts and keywords that maybe only they can understand. after that they need to translate those keywords into proper English for classes. I think that internet slang should be encouraged because it shows progress into nowadays youth.

questions:

  • If the word "thee" changed to "thou" and then to "You" why shouldn't we use "U"?
  • Do people learn English for school or life?
